Cast Iron fascias, inserts or back panels have evolved over time, and they are able to be used with gas or electric fires to offer the look of a traditional fireplace.
There is also the option to use with a high efficiency inset gas appliance for more heat and greater efficiency. There is also the additional choice of an electric inset fire and they can also be used for solid fuel with a clay back which would include a finishing trim and fret complete with an ash pan cover.
